About Great Kills
Great Kills is the South Shore's northernmost community. The
Great Kills station on the Staten Island Railway is at the southern end of this
street, in the heart of the community's business district. The present name of
Great Kills was informally adopted in 1865.

- Traffic light or sign needed at Amboy Road between Gifford’s and Richmond County Bank to slow or stop vehicles approaching the turn.
- Improve pedestrian pathways - crossing sites, including adding crosswalks, signage, and repainting crosswalks and yellow lines.
- Move DOT placement of sidewalk traffic signs on Amboy and Brown Street.
- Consider a bike lane option for Gifford’s Lane near Brower Court
- Get DOT to fix pot holes
Sanitation / Beautification Issues:
- Lack of Public trash cans

- Farrell Lumber Building and attached vacant lot run down, contains overgrowth of weeds, graffiti

- Amboy Road just above Gifford’s-youth climbing onto roofs and damaging property and graffiti
- Muni Lot is also an area where youths hang out, making it look unsafe to park
- Request for beat cop around train station area in late afternoon / evening

Accomplishments
- Great Kills merchants coordinated several meetings to discuss program and forming a group to plan and manage future activities.
- Secured sanitation services which began in May.
- Placed Lighted Holiday Archway at Amboy Road and Giffords Lane (12/15-1/15).
- Clean up of two vacant lots.
- Repaving of Municipal Lot.
- Posting of Municipal Lot direction signs.
- NYC DOT meeting resulting in re-assessment study of traffic and parking issues.
- Launch of the South Shore LDC website.
Future Projects
- Farrell Lumber Property taken over by developer that is working with Councilman to draft plan that best fits the area
- Security services targeted for June.
- Staten Island Railroad to address water leakage and steam clean trestle over Richmond Avenue.
- Commercial to promote shopping in Eltingville to run on cable TV in June.
